Students who wish to maximize the computer science and related background they acquire from their study at the University of Indianapolis Athens Campus as computer science majors may choose to benefit from the following options:
- Students may take Cisco Networking Academy Program courses instead of CSCI
420 Computer Networks and Distributed Computing. Completing the CNAP program students may take the CCNA examination and become Cisco Certified Network Associates. In this way they can complement their academic qualifications with an industrial one.
- Students may choose the following electives to satisfy the requirement for their major:
CSCI 400-4 Java Programming. This will allow them to acquire skills in Java programming. With Java being the language that has revolutionized internet computing, skills in Java programming are essential for the current computer scientist.
CSCI 400-13 Thesis. The preparation of a graduating thesis gives undergraduate students the opportunity to deepen their understanding on a topic of their choice, combine skills acquired in different courses in order to provide a solution to a theoretical or practical problem and demonstrate their ability to work at a graduate level. A good undergraduate thesis can be the passport for the acceptance for a competitive, high standard graduate program.
- Students may choose to take MATH 220 Elementary Statistics as an elective course, in order to complement their scientific background. Due to the a central role that statistics have in research methods an uderstanding of statistics is essential for anyone who wishes to be called a scientist.
- Students may choose their free electives from the list of courses offered by the department of computer science.
- Students may choose to actively participate in the organization of scientific events, such as international scientific conferences, and benefit from the opportunity to attend the events and socialize with leading computer scientists from around the world.
